On June 30, 2025, the webinar on the “MULTIMODAL APPROACH TO READING” topic was held in cooperation with the Republican Pedagogical-Psychological Center and Perkins School for the Blind organization.
Speakers of the Webinar were Martina Celizić and Ivana Rogar Gojević, experts from the “Perkins International” organization.
The Webinar was aimed at developing literacy skills in children with multiple disabilities and meeting their educational needs. The speakers addressed the fundamental right to literacy, which ensures the ability to access text and printed materials, regardless of the complexity of the disability. The right of a person to communicate, socialize, and make choices in life, which becomes accessible through reading and writing, was also considered.
During the Webinar, the speakers presented what an effective communication system should look like to enable children with multiple disabilities to become familiar with functional reading. According to them, literacy should not be viewed only at the level of letter knowledge: the skills and concepts that precede reading should also be taken into account. Exposure to books from an early age and connecting them to one’s own experiences are also fundamental, and the focus should be on the idea of reading, not just the skill. They believe it is important to consider different learning paths and use different sensory stimuli. The logical connection between assistive communication and reading was emphasized, and from this point of view, the use of various communication tools, elements of universal learning design, and various modes of engagement and self-expression were also highlighted.
We would like to remind you that the series of webinars is aimed at the exchange of best practices between specialists from different countries.
